Infidelity Double Standards Through The Eyes Of A Non-Feminist

Posted in: , , , ,

By Onyinye Orabuike

I have never been accused of being a feminist, neither do I hope to be mistaken for one.

In truth I am not particularly passionate about the plight of women. I found out early that my sentiments are painfully unpopular among girls my age whose goals were either to get married to a very wealthy man and live a life of ease, or ditch men altogether and make their own way in life.

[Photo + Video] Can Witches Fly Like Birds Then Fall And Become Human?

Posted in: , , , ,

I'm sorry to bring you this graphic image but I think we need to talk about this. A Twitter user @spicybebe shared the photo above on Twitter, and according to her and certain other Nigerian Twitter users, she is a bird which fell from a power line in the Oshodi part of Lagos and turned into a woman by the time she landed on the ground. Confusing, right? Is it even possible?

A mob immediately gathered calling her a witch and it took the intervention of police men or the poor woman would've been lynched. Hmmm...

Someone pointed out that there's one dark-skinned woman in the line-up, or one may be forced to ask if Obas discriminate against the darker sisters. It's all good.

Blast From The Past - Jack Johnson And The History of Interracial Marriage in America

Posted in: , , ,

Jack Johnson was the first black heavyweight boxer of the world back in the early 1900's. He had three white wives, and refused to date a black woman. He was arrested and jailed for being with these white women and was recommended to be lynched for marrying them.

Johnson was married three times. All of his wives were white, a fact that caused considerable controversy at the time. In January 1911 Johnson married Etta Terry Duryea. A Brooklyn socialite, their romantic involvement was turbulent. Beaten several times by Johnson and suffering from depression, she committed suicide in September 1912.

Less than three months later, on 4 December 1912, Johnson married Lucille Cameron, a young prostitute. After Johnson married Cameron, two ministers in the South recommended that Johnson be lynched. Cameron divorced him in 1924 on the grounds of infidelity. The next year Johnson married Irene Pineau; also white.

Blast From The Past - When Lagos To New York Round Trip Flight Was N17,000

Posted in: , , , ,
I can't claim to have experienced those good old days, but a lot of older Nigerians enjoyed the largese of a rich, young and vibrant Nigeria, when out Naira had value, and our country was respected around the world.

A friend shared this on Nigeria Airways newspaper advert from the early 80s on FB and a commenter added his own reminiscence -

Them good ol' days. I still remember paying N1,040 as airfare for Nigeria Airways to and fro London from Lagos in 1980 (British Caledonian then was N1, 240). Reminiscence.

do you think inflation accounts for the high price now, more than 10X what it used to be, or the general decline of the economy is to blame? Is Nigeria Airways still working now BTW?

14-Year-Old Girl Who Escaped Her Older Husband And Gets A Divorce Tells Her Story

Posted in: , , ,

Maimuna Abdullahi was sold into marriage by her parents for £120 and abused by her new husband, who locked her away and forced hard labour on her.

When she ran home she was beaten, first by her father, then her husband, and was summarily divorced by her husband for daring to flee – and she is still just 14 years old.

She is one of thousands in Nigeria with similar stories – and, shockingly, her husband blames his beaten former bride for her ordeal, saying she was disobedient and over-educated.

Maimuna’s former husband, Mahammadu Saidu, blames her few years of school for her disobedience. A handsome man of 28 who is obviously proud of his ankle-high boots, he does not deny beating his wife.
‘She had too much ABCD,’ he says. ‘Too much ABCD.’

A Typical Traditional Marriage List In Igboland - True or False?

Posted in: , , , ,

When I shared a bride price list last year here, I felt it was a bit on the moderate side since some of the items were like N200 and none cost more than N5,000. This is another Igbo traditional marriage list I just saw and the person that shared it said it was the typical list in all of Igboland.

I beg to disagree o, some of the exorbitiant quotes and included gifts brought tears to my eyes. I've never seen such a list before. I'm sure even the elders of the Brideprice app [here] haven't seen it before either.

Which part of Igboland does this list belong to? I think the ladies from that area need to boycott traditional weddings. Period! Unless all of them can find and marry billionaires like Dangote, of course.

Check it out below...

Many Find the Bride Price Calculator Funny, But There is a Petition to Remove It?

Posted in: , , , ,

I confess, I was not upset at all by the Bride Price website [read here], but found it funny. I didn't over think it, probably because I've been really saddened by the high spate of violence in Nigeria and needed something to make me laugh. I did the price check with Atala who pointed out how it could be problematic.

RIP Femi Segun - You Came, You Saw, You Lived To the Full

Posted in: , ,

Olufemi E. Segun was a charmer and a perfect gentleman. Learnt through Facebook yesterday that he passed away, and seeing his obituary on websites and blogs just got me emotional all over again.

He was among the many people I met on NVS - the same nigerian message board I met my husband and I loved his stories, his drive, his ambition, his young at heartedness, if that's a word. He discussed with a certain intellect and insight that not many online Nigerians are able to display in passionate political discourse.

Blast From the Past - Nepa Says No More Blackout

Posted in: , , , ,

There is NEPA no more, so maybe we shouldn't hold this newspaper headline from back in the eighties against the power company? The deadline for no more black outs was 1986, now almost thirty years later, and an identity change, black outs, and regular prolonged ones at that, are still with us.

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti died in 1997 at 58, but his music and legacy are enduring, and a celebration of his life and music is celebrated around his birthday, October 15 every year. In the spirit of Felabration, I am sharing picture of Fela and his first wife, Taylor Remilekun Ransome Kuti.
